  Mike's Magic Moment

Magical Mike continued his feature race rampage this season when he took out the $27,000 Allforks Hire Winter Championship Final (2160m) last Friday night at Harold park.
The victory goes alongside the Inter City Pace and Oak Classic wins earlier in the year. Owner Alex micallef said he didn't expect to have this much sucess so quickly.
"It's just an unbelievable roller-coaster ride that I wish would never end," he said.
"When I first bought him I didn't think he would win this many features. Initially, Les (kosklin, trainer-driver) and I had three races mapped out - a standing start series at Newcastle, the Inter City Pace and the Carousel.
"He made the final of the series at newcastle but we scratched him. He won the heat and final of the Inter City but that unfortunately made him ineligible for the Carousel.
"Then came the Oak Classic and now the Winter Championship."
The former New Zealander was owned by Greg Brodie and initially arrived in Melbourne. After a few race starts for limited success, Micallef seized the opportunity to buy the talented son of Sokys Atom.
"I made an offer to Greg (Brodie) after watching the horse in Melbourne because I know he is a guy who is mainly interested in group horses," he explained.
"Since Magical Mike wasn't showing much at the time, Greg decided to sell. I immediately gave the horse to Les to train."
"He was instantly impressed witht the way he looked and not long later he was at the races and winning."
The 40-year-old business consultant said the relationship between himself and Kosklin had spiralled through their involvement with the horse.
"I met Les at the Maitland showground four years ago and I've never had a bad word to say about him," Micallef said.
"I raced a horse with him by the name of Zaleb, who I made a handy little profit out of. I also had another horse called Worthy Vanston, but he didn't win a race.
"When magical Mike came along it took our friendship to a new level. I promised Les that if he could win the heat and final of the Inter City pace I would give him a half share, and when that happened I didn't go back on my word."
Magical Mike started from barrier 11 last Friday night but Kosklin soon had him up outside the leader, Regrowth (Dennis Wilson). When Regrowth compounded in the back straight the final time, Magical Mike raced to the lead. he was never threatened in the straight, holding a 9.5 metre advantage over Secret Harmony (Greg Bennett) with Classic Pastime (Blake Fitzpatrick) a nose away third.
The mile rate for the 2160m distance was 1:59.5.
Following the win there were rumours of offers to buy Magical Mike.
"I heard there were a few whispers about offers for him but I haven't heard much," Micallef said.
"There have been a few offers but they've been unreasonable. If I was offered a good enough price, I would sell him.
"He's been for sale for quite a while now but we are yet to recieve a genuine price.
"I think he's capable of being an Inter Dominion contender next year at the rate he's travelling. He's gone from a C3 to an M1 already this season."
Kosklin said the aim would now be to capture another feature event - the MO/M1 Winter Championship Series (conducted over 1760m) which kicks off this Friday night at Harold Park.
"We're going for another one," Kosklin said.
"The horse pulled up fine after the win and I gave him three days off in the paddock. We'll skip these weeks heats and hope he can qualify the following week.
"It's going to be a lot harder since it's over the short trip, but if he draws the front he'll be very hard to beat again.
"After this series he'll head to the paddock for a month. This has been his best season by far and I think as a six-year-old he can build on what he's done this term.
